Abstract

Claims about the productivity effects of artificial intelligence range from large gains to negligible ones, and the disagreement reflects differences in how work is divided between people and systems. This paper models productivity as a function of task complexity and work mode, comparing human-alone, AI-alone, static human–AI collaboration and adaptive collaboration in which tasks are routed to whichever party is stronger at each complexity level. In a simulation across the complexity range, AI alone is most productive on simple tasks (1.44 relative units) and least on complex ones (0.19), human-alone performance is stable (0.96 to 0.75), static collaboration averages the two with a coordination cost, and adaptive collaboration dominates with the highest mean productivity (1.09 versus 0.85 for humans alone). At the organisational level, a simulation of 500 firms shows that the performance return to AI adoption depends on complementary process redesign and training: the adoption–redesign interaction (1.18) is several times the main effect of adoption (0.28), and the adoption–training interaction (0.78) is also substantial. The paper argues that the productivity gains from human–AI collaboration are realised through task allocation and organisational complements rather than through adoption itself, and sets out principles for designing collaborative work and measuring its effects.
